🚨 Important Security Alert: Beware of the “Accidental Deposit” Scam

8/13/2025

Written by Paul @BizPayO

Some merchants have recently been targeted by a scam involving fake ACH deposits and urgent refund requests. While no one lost money this time, it’s important to know how this works so you can protect your business.

How the Scam Works

  1. Fraudulent Deposit – A scammer “accidentally” sends a large payment to your account (often using a stolen bank account) through a public Make a Payment link.

  2. Urgent Request – They contact you, claiming it was a mistake and ask you to “return” the funds—often via wire transfer, payment apps, gift cards, or a different account.

  3. Reversal – The original ACH deposit is later reversed when the bank discovers it was fraudulent.

  4. You Lose Money – If you’ve already sent the money back, you’ll be left with a negative balance, and the scammer keeps the stolen funds.

What to Do If This Happens

  • ✅ Know Your Clients – If you don’t recognize the transaction, try to void it the same day.

  • 🚫 Never Refund or Return Funds without verifying the sender and payment details.

  • 💰 Don’t Spend the Money – If it’s reversed, you’ll be responsible for the amount.

  • 📞 Contact BizPayO and Zift Immediately – Provide all details so we can investigate.

  • 👀 Monitor Your Account – Watch for reversals or suspicious activity.
